February 2018 Book Review

by Courtney Schultz

february-books.jpgWell, as expected, I read fewer books in the month of February than January. I blame it on less idle/travel time, a shorter month and frankly, being overly ambitious with my reading in January. That was probably not a sustainable pace to begin with. But I still managed to tick 3 books off the list!

Woman In The Window

Oh. My. Goodness. I loved this book. I read it as a part of following along with Kristy Wicks’ book club on her blog, and I’m so glad I did. I was really intimidated to read it, though! I knew it would be creepy and suspenseful and the only other experience I had with suspense was Gone Girl (::shivers::) and Girl on the Train (looking forward to seeing this movie if I can ever put down a book long enough to watch something). I enjoyed them but they definitely made me tense, so my reluctance to read WITW was no surprise to me. But I soldiered on and read it anyway because I kept seeing SO MUCH about it, and for the love of all things neurotic, I’m glad I did! Among my top 3 books for 2018 for SURE. If you’re into the suspense/mystery genre, check this one out.

The Power of a Praying Parent

This was a very good book that got me to be much more serious about my prayer life over my children. I must admit (as I write this in July) that I’ve already fallen off the wagon a little bit with the in-depth and specific prayers she leads you through in the book, but that’s all the more reason to feel grateful for her writing, that I can revisit it year after year (or even monthly/weekly if I need help over a specific topic). Stockton has read The Power of a Praying Husband as well and The Power of a Praying Wife is on my list. I would say this should be required reading for all parents!

Confessions of a Domestic Failure

This book just bored me to tears. I did not enjoy it. I thought the writing was sort of annoying and the story was just so dramatized. The basis is a new mom drowning in her life with a baby and trying to keep her household in order, while idolizing and comparing her every move to a super star celeb mom (think Martha Stewart if Martha Stewart was also a SuperMom to young kids with a blog, tv show, lifestyle following, etc.). Her idolization lands her in a contest with other moms trying to win the affections (and prize money) from her MegaMom hero, except she realizes the grass is only greener where you water it. Blah blah blah, I just thought it was boring and dull. Maybe because I had just read the super suspenseful Woman in the Window and nothing would hold up to that, but this one got a minimal star rating in my book!

Looking forward to next month’s picks and whittling down my list even more as 2018 crawls on. What have you read so far? Share in the comments so I can check out your reader recommendations!
